Essential Reads On Western Civilization

If you are looking for some great dramatic books, look at these curated by the Ennymedia review team.

Truman by David McCullough (1992)

The atomic bomb dropping was an important event in human history as the reconstruction that took place immediately after the most significant conflict in human history. In this readable narrative, historian David McCullough explains how Harry Truman became the 33rd President, used his office to bring about the difficult transition to the nuclear age while navigating the communist threat and launching America into the most significant economic expansion experienced by any country, ever. McCullough's book teaches how even a mild-mannered hat salesperson can demonstrate outstanding leadership and how that doesn't necessarily need excellent communication skills (he didn’t have them) or a bombastic personality (he didn’t have that either). It just needs common sense, something he did have.

Becoming by Michelle Obama (2018)

What better way to understand the last part of the 20th century and the first decades of this century than to read an autobiography written by a woman who had a front-row seat to these as she and her husband traveled, studied, raised a family and then made their way all the to the White House? Michelle Obama gives a perspective on this current period of American history that few others can.

The best true crime stories to read now

If you are looking for some suspenseful reading, then get your hands on these books now.

The Dead Girl by Melanie Thernstrom
The Dead Girl, based on Thernstrom’s diary, is the retelling of intimate thoughts and emotions surrounding the murder of her childhood best friend Bibi Lee. After Lee goes missing while jogging in the hills of Oakland with her boyfriend Bradley Page, a colossal search mission ensues. In a state of distress, Thernstrom begins compiling her friend’s letters and poems. When Bibi’s body is discovered five weeks later, Thernstorm begins writing about their lives together.

Black Klansman by Ron Stallworth
In Ron Stallworth’s inaugural book and memoir, he recalls his time as the first black detective in the Colorado Springs Police Department. When he comes across a classified ad in the local paper about joining the Ku Klux Klan, he responds using his real name while posing as a white man. Stallworth narrates the ensuing undercover investigation into the KKK and draws parallels between the Klan’s stance on immigration and other issues impacting the country with the current era of Donald Trump’s politics. His chilling story was also recently adapted into a major motion picture directed by Spike Lee.

The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher: A Shocking Murder and the Undoing of a Great by Kate Summerscale
In June of 1860, three-year-old Saville Kent was found at the bottom of an outhouse with a slit throat. Inspector Jonathan Whicher, one of the founding members of Scotland Yard, the London Metropolitan Police Service, pursued the case relentlessly — but without sufficient evidence or a confession, the case was only circumstantial, leaving the investigator feeling defeated. The novel features a fast-paced narrative and brutal retelling of the case to create a dark fable that spawned a TV series under the same name.

The Best Movies of 2020 So Far

Even though we are only a few months into 2020, here is a small selection of films which headed straight for digital or streaming releases during the pandemic, and which we consider some of the best movies of the year so far.

The Whistlers

This crime comedy-drama starts off as a strange tale about a policeman who has to learn a “whistling” language used by the inhabitants of one of the Canary Islands in order to help free a gangster from prison. What comes next is a twist into a story on love, loyalty, and self-improvement.

Beanpole

This historical drama follows two female veterans trying to reconnect with life in postwar St. Petersburg. The film is elegant in its storytelling, using vivid colour while simultaneously pulling at your heart strings.

The Way Back

Ben Affleck stars as an alcoholic former high-school basketball star who gets a chance at redemption when he’s hired to coach his alma mater’s team. This film strikes a fine balance between delivering the promised underdog sports drama and presenting a portrait of trauma and grief.

Lost Girls

This drama is based on Robert Kolker’s book about the victims of a still-at-large Long Island serial killer believed to have butchered between 10 and 16 female sex workers — whose bodies lay for years on a stretch of Gilgo Beach.

For plenty more drama, check out www.ennymedia.com.

The Top Crime Drama Shows on Netflix Now

Look no further than Netflix for your source for the best crime drama series. Here are the highest-rated crime TV dramas you need to watch now.

Babylon Berlin

This Netflix-original historical drama follows a police detective and a sex worker who team up to uncover political conspiracies during Weimar Republic-era Germany. Intensely historic, Babylon Berlin follows the main characters and the city of Berlin as it falls to the Nazi era in a way not yet done before.

  Alias Grace

Alias Grace is a dramatic recreation of a real murder case that took place in 19th-century Canada. Grace Marks is the murderess in this series that follows her as she is tried in the murder of her former employer.

Unbelievable

This series follows the trial of a young teenage girl who is accused of lying about being raped and the two detectives who work to reveal the truth. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning article, “An Unbelievable Story of Rape,” this series dramatizes the infamous 2008-11 Washington and Colorado serial rape cases.

Like your job but don’t love it? Here are a few ways to turn your boring 9-5 into something you love.

Be excellent

Excellence is taking things to another level, such as putting on a great outfit, having a new manicure and haircut, as examples.

See the larger purpose and how you contribute to it

What are the company’s goals? How about your boss’ goals? What is your company’s big picture and why does your company do what it does? Then, how does this company help people? Or animals? Or the environment? Answering these questions can increase your motivation and passion for your job.

Buddy up

The happiest people at work are those who are connected to other people, so why not make an effort to break away at lunchtime and connect with your co-workers?

Identify the benefits

Take a few minutes and write down 10 to 25 benefits of your job, including the workout center, paid vacation, and the health insurance. By focusing on the positives you will feel better about your job.

Plot your exit

In case you do want to leave your job, what would you rather do? This is the time to identify your dream job if it isn’t the work you’re currently doing, then consider how your current job will help you get into your passion.

The Breaking Bad Fan Theory That Blew Our Minds

While he played a major role in the series, we ultimately don’t know that much about Gustavo Fring, the ruthless meth distributor and ruler of the fried chicken empire known as Los Pollos Hermanos. While he would ultimately come to regret his involvement with Walter White, there’s no denying his dealing with the notorious Heisenberg brought him quite a bit of benefit at first. But just how to Fring rise to power? What mysterious origins lie behind the Chicken Man?

What we know for certain is that Fring hails from Chile, and that he immigrated to Mexico in the 1980s during the Chilean dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. From there we know he fell in with cartel kingpin Don Eladio, who had one of his men, Hector Salamanca, shoot his longtime friend and crime partner, Maximino "Max" Arciniega in the head. But why didn’t he kill Fring as well? One Reddit fan theory sheds light on the subject, and totally blew us away.

Since Don Eladio has no qualms about killing off his competition, one can only assume Fring had some sort of protection, and fans suspect that protection may have come from the CIA. A possible theory is that Fring was once a Chilean aristocrat who helped the CIA install Augusto Pinochet in power. Once Pinochet became a liability, however, Fring moved to Mexico at the CIA’s behest to infiltrate the drug cartel, which would have allowed him to bypass immigration issues the spotty record of his past may have posed. It’s only a theory, of course, and we may never know the answer, but it sure is fun to think about!
