David Fincher Set to Direct the Netflix Original “Mank”

Considered one of the greatest movies of all time, Citizen Kane is a masterpiece still appreciated by multiple generations of movie fans. Co-writer Herman J. Mankiewicz will be the subject of an upcoming Netflix biopic starring Gary Oldman entitled: Mank. The film will follow Mankiewitz through the tumultuous development of the now famed film, and will also follow the co-writer’s relationship with temperamental director Orson Wells. Citizen Kane won an Oscar for its original screenplay, although surprisingly, it’s the only hardware the film took home.

Mank will be a very personal project for director David Fincher. Fincher, now famous for producing such shows for Netflix as House of Cards, Mindhunter, and the anime series Love, Death & Robots, hasn’t made a feature film since 2014’s Gone Girl. While a biopic about a screenwriter may seem slightly out of character for Fincher, this one is of particular interest to him, as the screenplay was written by Fincher’s late father, Howard ‘Jack’ Fincher, who wrote the script prior to his death in 2003.

It’s yet unclear as to what kind of light Mank will paint either Mankiewicz or Welles in, but many have argued that Mankewicz deserves far more credit than he received for the greatness of Citizen Kane. No word yet on an expected release date, but we’re all eagerly waiting in anticipation.
