The Real Life Dramas That Inspired Great Movies

True life has its way of inspiring not just great books but great film and television as well, and some of our greatest dramas could only come from real life events and people. Here are three great movies and the real life events that inspired them.

Schindler’s List. Oskar Schindler was a German factory owner who saved the lives of well over a thousands Jews during the Holocaust by employing them in his factories in Poland and keeping them hidden from the Nazis. Steven Spielberg brought the epic tale to life on screen in 1993 based on the 1982 novel Schindler’s Ark.

The Pianist. Another gripping tale of the Holocaust, Roman Polanski tells the tale of pianist Władysław Szpilman who was forced to live in the Warsaw Ghetto during the Nazi occupation of Poland. Based on Szpilman’s autobiography of the same name, Polanski put much of his personal experience into the film to give a truly disturbing look into the atrocities committed during the Holocaust.

Milk. Sean Penn’s stellar depiction of gay rights activist and openly gay politician Harvey Milk earned him a Golden Globe nomination and a Screen Actors Guild award for Best Actor. The film follows Milk from the start of his voyage into activism and political life right up until his horrific murder at the hands of Dan White.
